2020 California salmon abundance estimates for the upcoming salmon fishing season are coming in at over a half a million king salmon for the 2020 king salmon fishing season.

With great estimates of returning king salmon to Northern California on the Sacramento and Feather Rivers, full seasons and full salmon limits are expected to be announced this spring for these California rivers. Here are a few good fishing trips to consider here this March and April.
Sacramento River trout and striper fishing.
The upper stretches of the Sacramento River near Redding California is still a top choice for world class trout fishing for both conventional and fly anglers. The top ten miles of Sacramento River from Anderson California upriver through downtown Redding offers the most trout per mile on the Lower Sacramento River. Drift fishing small egg patterns wether it a soft or hard bead is all it takes for multiple hook ups on wild rainbow trout 14 to 20 inches. With several great boat launches to choose from both jet sleds and drift boats do very well.
This springs annal stripped bass run is fast approaching as large numbers of stripers are congregating in the brackish waters of the California Delta. As spring rains raise the Sacramento and Feather Rivers, large numbers of these bass will migrate upriver to the spawning grounds of both rivers. April and May are top months to target stripped bass. Smith and Chetco River steelhead fishing.
As a very dry February passes the flows on the Smith and Chetco Rivers are getting dangerously low making for challenging steelhead fishing conditions. With the low clear conditions there are a few good pieces of water to side drift egg/puffball combos through and several good producing pieces of plug pulling water. With the low clear conditions anglers and guides alike are working hard for one to three hook ups of fresh upriver steelhead 5 to 12 pounds. Other rivers in Northern California and Southern Oregon are offering better steelhead fishing like the Mad, Eel and Umpqua Rivers. As rains return anglers can expect good runs of both fresh upriver steelhead and run backs.
