Sacramento River salmon opener

This Tuesday July 16, 2019 the Sacramento River will officially open to a full king salmon fishing season.  This year the Sacramento River will be open for king salmon fishing from July 16 through December 16, 2019.  This season has been highly anticipated by salmon fishing enthusiasts as salmon limits have been raised as well as the tremendous salmon fishing happening outside the Golden Gate Bridge.  This year anglers will enjoy a two salmon limit per day with a total possession limit of four adult king salmon.  King salmon average 15 t0 22 pounds on the Sacramento River with many king salmon tipping the scales over 30 and 40 pounds every week.  The upper Barge Hole opener will happen on August 1st above the Red Bluff Diversion Dam.  The July 16th opener will open 150 feet below the Sycamore Grove boat launch at the Red Bluff Diversion Dam.  Until then, Anglers can give the Trinity river west of Weaverville California a try as fresh spring run king salmon make their way up that river from the Klamath River.

Sacramento River trout fishing

There has been some fair to good rainbow trout action happening in downtown Redding California.  The best wild trout fishing has been from the Highway 44 bridge in Redding downriver through Anderson California.  There has also been some very nice trout caught this week from Anderson California downriver through Red Bluff California.  Catching double digits of hard fighting wild rainbow trout has been the average recently with trout from 14 to 22 inches or one to three pounds rounding out the catches. Some of the trout holding waters below Redding are holding large schools of rainbows.  Side drifting a pegged BNR soft bead or a hand tied glo bug has worked with various egg color patterns being used.  Anglers choosing to back troll small hot shots in the size 50 or 60’s are also scoring on larger trout.  Trout fishing in the upper 5.5 closed section in Redding will re open on August 1st as it has been closed to protect returning king salmon to that area since April 1st.  Anglers looking for another great gamefish to target should try the American shad that are holding from Red Bluff downriver through Chico California.
