Sacramento River salmon fishing season.

It is official! The 2018 Sacramento River salmon fishing season has been announced and will re open on July 16, 2018.   The salmon season opener will begin 150 feet below the Sycamore Grove boat launch and will remain open downriver to the Carquinez Bridge through December 16, 2018.  The upper Sacramento River will open from Red Bluff up to the Deschutes Bridge in Anderson on August 1, 2018.  This year anglers will be allowed one salmon per person per day daily bag limit.  The possession limit is two salmon per person.

Sacramento River striper and shad fishing report.

Anglers still out pursuing the tail end of this springs striper run on the Sacramento River are still finding some success in the Colusa and Tisdale section of Sacramento River.  Early in the mornings and late evenings are best times for success on Sacramento River striped bass.

The annual American shad run is happening now from Red Bluff downriver through Colusa.  Schools of hard fighting American shad are moving upriver daily.  Best bets are small brightly colored jigs tipped with one inch chartreuse curly tailed grubs.  Hot colors are chartreuse, flame red and bubble gum pink.  Early mornings and evenings are best now and shad should remain in large catchable numbers through July.

Sacramento River trout fishing report.

The wild rainbow trout fishing has been strong from the 44 Bridge downriver through Redding and Anderson this week.  Trout one to three pounds on average have been falling for small hand tied glo bugs in various egg colors.  Anglers fishing the small BR soft beads pegged above a small barbless hook have also been doing well.  Best back trolling action for trout has been small hot shot style plugs in silver, gold or copper colors in the 50 or 60 sizes.  Side drifting egg patterns or back trolling small plugs have been the two top producing techniques for bows’ one to three pounds and larger trout four or five pounds mixed in daily.
