Northern California salmon fishing report.

The returns of king salmon are mixed here in Northern California in late August.  Traditionally many salmon anglers and guides alike are mostly on the entire stretch of the Sacramento River.  This season is very different in late August with few salmon on some of the rivers and more showing on others.  The Trinity River west of Redding has been fishing fantastic for over a month now with both adult and jack salmon being caught daily.  The Trinity River flows have now dropped and most of the fresh kings in the lower Trinity River gorge have moved up to the colder waters of Junction City, Douglas City and Lewiston.  Some Summer steelhead have also shown up this month in catchable numbers.

Over towards Oroville California the Feather River Outlet Hole has the flows and colder water that have attracted more fresh king salmon to the area.  Most of all of the salmon catching action has taken place in the Outlet Hole with a few being caught downriver of the Outlet Hole.  The Outlet Hole has been good for both bank and boat anglers with large and small fresh king salmon being caught.  Bank anglers have been successful casting large blue fox style spinners for king salmon to 20 plus pounds.  The boat anglers are doing well with sardine wrapped kwikfish style plugs or back bouncing roe in the Outlet Hole as reported by Sacramento salmon fishing guide Dave Jacobs. Over on the Sacramento River the salmon schools are small and spread out.  One day a few kings hooked in Corning or Colusa, the next couple of days reports of a couple hooked in Los Molinos or Red Bluff California.  There have even been a couple hooked up the top end in the Barge Hole and canyon stretch below the hatchery.  With the tremendous salmon catching reports that have been coming out of the Golden Gate and Half Moon Bay for weeks now, there could be a very large push of king salmon into both the Sacramento and Feather rivers in the next four to six weeks.
