We have been splitting up our days fishing on the Sacramento River for wild rainbow trout near Redding, Ca. and the American shad below Red Bluff, Ca. The trout fishing along with the shad has been best in the mornings. We have also seen some very good shad fishing later in the afternoons and evenings this past week. Side drifting small egg color combos and back trolling small hot shot style lures have been best for trout one to three pounds. Swinging small brightly colored jigs tipped with a one inch curly tailed grub has been top producer for the Americn shad. With just under one month to go before the start of the 2016 Sacramento River salmon season, anglers eagerly await their first chances at catching one of California’s most prized gamefish, the king salmon. It has been announced that the 2016 Sacramento River salmon season will open 150 feet below the Sycamore boat launch in Red Bluff, Ca. on the morning of July 16th. The Sacramento River salmon season will remain open until December 16th.
