Smith River steelhead fishing guides Feb 14, 2016.

The current dry weather pattern has brought with it low and clear fishing conditions on the Smith River.  Fishing pressure has been light this week with good fishing for fresh steelhead 8 to 10 pounds.  Small light tackle is key to being successful here on the Smith with the low clear flows.  If the current weather forecast holds, returning rains on the Smith River mid week could really help improve the steelhead fishing here through the end of February.

Further North on the Chetco River,  flows are now low and clearer but the Chetco has held some good color making for good steelhead fishing overall.  Both bank and drift boat fishermen are doing good for steelhead 5 to 8 pounds with several fish this past week from 10 to 12 pounds.  Here too, side drifting small light tackle is key to getting steelhead to bite in the lower, clearer river.  Rains by mid week are expected to bring a spark in flows on the Chetco River making for much better fishing conditions through late February.

Pictured is another Northern California/Southern Oregon hatchery steelhead caught this week.  Great steelhead fishing continues here and will build through late February early March.
