Smith River steelhead fishing report Jan 17, 2016 Dave Jacobs January 17, 2016 Recent Catches, Sacramento River fishing reports Smith River steelhead fishing report Jan 17, 2016. Currently the Smith River is receiving more much needed rain this holiday weekend and will certainly be blowing out today. The Smith River has been fishing very well this past week mostly from the bank due to high water as reported by Smith River steelhead fishing guide Dave Jacobs. A fresh push of 8 to 12 pound steelhead have moved this week with plunking and drifting when possible working best. The Smith River steelhead season has gotten off to a great start and the rest of January and February look to be just as good with new runs of steelhead moving in daily. River flows may calm down later this week but there is steady rain forecasted for most of this upcoming week. To the North, the Chetco River has also fished very well up until this most recent river rise. The Chetco is also very high and looking like it too will blow out today. The Chetco River has been very consistent with many boat and bank fishermen doing well in January. The Chetco looks to be out for awhile with more rain forecasted this week as well. Pictured is another Smith River steelhead caught and released while bank fishing the high water this week.
