Trinity River steelhead fishing

Steelhead fishing in the upper Trinity River is now fishing well with winter releases from Lewiston at 300 cfs.. Flows and clear river conditions are good now from Lewiston downriver through Cedar Flat.  Steelhead are scattered throughout the Trinity 3 to 6 ponds with larger steelhead 6 plus pounds are happening occasionally.  Trinity River fishing guide Dave Jacobs reports both bank and drift boating happening now for conventional spin and fly fishing.

Smith and Chetco River steelhead fishing

The Smith River has now dropped to low and clear fishing conditions with the Smith River at 7.5 feet.  Steelhead 10 plus pounds are being landed from the bank and for the drift boats this week with larger fish 10 plus pounds coming in occasionally.  Overall the steelhead fishing has been slow for most in late December but fishing is picking up with the full moon and big tides. Reports of good numbers of steelhead are moving into the lower Smith and Chetco Rivers.  Steelhead fishing should start to really improve on the Smith River through January.  Steelhead fishermen looking for other steelhead fishing rivers in Northern California and Southern Oregon should give the Chetco River or the South and main stem Eel River a try now as those rivers are fishing at the time of this report.  There are better numbers of steelhead coming into the lower sections of both of these rivers too. Expect these steelhead runs to build into January and February as reported by Chetco River steelhead fishing guide Dave Jacobs.
